Transmission Optical Microscope and Integrated Micromanipulator

Instrument Model: 4290-3DM
Manufacturer: Custom Probes Unlimited

3D micromanipulator and optical microscope

Transmission optical microscopy is ideal for monitoring the etching of metal wires into controlled geometry tips.  Designed by Dr. Allan Melmed, the CPU System 4290-3DM from Custom Probes Unlimited will help develop a standardized procedure for fabricating tips for filed ion microscopy (FIM) and three-dimensional atom probe microscopy (3DAP).

This system consists of a 3-D pneumatic micromanipulator and a specially equipped microscope equipped with some accessories:

  • 3-D joystick controlled pneumatic micromanipulator
  • 3-lens optical microscope adapted for 210mm barrel length with X-Y adjustable stage and specimen clamp
  • 1.25na substage condenser
  • Tungsten lamp illuminator
  • 15x wide view eyepiece
  • 5x and 10x conventional objective lens
  • Nikon 50x long-working distance objective lens (13.8mm), 0.45na
  • Protective glass slides for lenses
  • Wire loops for micropolishing W-like and Pt-like metals

  • Instructions for Pt/Ir etching are now available .doc format
