We have developed a technique to determine the
microstructure of various galvanneal coatings by cross-sectional TEM and AEM.
We are developing a numerical technique to predict the resulting microstructures
with varying galvannealing parameters and steel chemistry. The mechanical behavior
of the coatings during automated stamping operation is also being studied (by
in situ deformation in SEM, nanoindentation, and shear tests) and is being
correlated with the microstructures.
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques and
microscopic investigation are used to develop an NDE procedure that assesses
integrity and the interface in P/M metal matrix composites. The crack sizes,
numbers, and distribution are determined at various stages of fatigue by a
scanning electron microscope. The same technique is also employed to examine
nickel superalloys.
We study crystalline-to-amorphous transition
by means of irradiation-induced morphization of intermetallic compounds and
mechanical alloying. We investigate the structural evolution and nature of
transition by high-voltage electron microscopy, analytical electron microscopy,
and X-ray diffraction.
